Honing my innovation tools and leadership skills: after developing my design skills in the field for 5 years, I returned to Carnegie Mellon to pursue a Masters in Integrated Innovation for Products & Services (MIIPS). The program is an accelerated 9 month Masters that recruits students from backgrounds in Business, Engineering and Design, which allows the cohort to bring their own skills and bolster the skills of one another. During the 9 months I have taken 17 classes, and worked in as many cross-functional teams. I have taken a leadership role in many of these groups, focusing on how I can help guide new designers and innovators work together to create the most successful products and services. I have also taken many classes outside of the core program; MBA classes in Consumer Behavior, Organizational Design, Project Management, Finance, and Technology Strategy.
Part of my Finance for Innovation Management course was focused on Innovation Portfolio Management. To show our understanding and to give us an opportunity to do our own research on the matter, we were to create a Memo explaining the concepts to a fictional company that we worked at after graduation. Though there would be more complexities in a real life scenario, this was a useful tool to solidify my understanding of Innovation Portfolio Management and the different types of innovation.
