Application status tracker (2022)

The details

Where it started

The current/legacy experience utilizes an outdated tabbed approach, contains extraneous details, and ambiguous steps and labels. The result is a coding that is hard to understand and hard to use for our members.

Selected issues:

  • Ambiguous titles: “Almost Done” what does that mean?

  • Which checkmark icon means check? Do both?

  • Why is there a continue CTA? What does continue mean?

  • Why is this page utilized to cross sell?

Early Concepts

My Feedback

There was still a lot of ambiguity and nothing felt actionable. There also wasn’t space for multiple applications, which is a common use case. I suggested using a divergent approach and creating many concepts that didn’t only vary in visual patterns but in interactions, architectures and flows.

Secondary Research

I encouraged the UX Lead to start with more broad exploration. To gather inspiration I suggested doing secondary research on what trackers are out on the market in related and unrelated industries. While doing a more in-depth study would have been ideal, we had to move quickly.

Further Exploration

As the UX lead moved through conceptual models he also moved into our design system and toward a realistic UI. We also brought in our content strategist to pore over intricacies and nuance in the words, making sure it would be clear to the member what they were expected to do.

MVP (WIP)

The (nearly) final designs account for:

  • Multiple applications

  • Open and Closed states

  • Ability to upload documents

  • Easy to scan hierarchy and deeper information finding

  • Mobile friendly design
